People downsize for a variety of reasons, from the “empty nest” syndrome, to convenience or hardship. Here are a few things to consider as you contemplate moving to a smaller home:

Emotional ties

These are among the main barriers to downsizing. Equally, deciding on where to move, and what style will best suit, can be just as daunting.

Detaching those ties

During the downsizing process you may be surprised at how attached you have become to your possessions and how difficult it might seem to part with them. Start by sorting through your unused belongings first a few months before moving. Sell, donate, recycle, place items on e-Bay, Facebook Marketplace or give away those items you don’t need. Your move will be much easier with less clutter.

Do some planning

Interior Designers and Decorators highly recommend sketching floor plans for your new home to see where all your current furniture will fit. Don’t wait until you move to discover there’s no room for that armoire.

Hi Annie, I second your advice.! I myself am a baby boomer and looking at the whole downsizing thing personally. I helped my Mom too, helping aging parents is the same process but much more complicated when considering all the different ideas on the process as it relates to their own ideas, and what they want, and then add in a sibling or two and eureka! Complications. There is such a need out there to educate, and for us a realtors to provide some assistance and clarity w the process to make it easier and as stress free as possible. Up here in Toronto our team is doing the necessary thing to assist. We are holding seminars here w a team of biz individuals who support the process. We have the Move management company who specializes in online auctions, the Financial Planner/Estate Planner who helps them see the vision into the future and how they can continue to afford their new lifestyle, the Insurance Broker who helps them w the Right kind of Insurance needs, and best pricing and then me the Realtor and past RN who has worked w Seniors for many years in my past life but now a Baby Boomer who acutely understands the needs. This assembled team is also supported by a bevy of other fantastic support biz’s like Contractors, Stagers, Accountants and of course a network of other Realtors all across the country to refer our outbound Sellers and buyers to, so that our clients are taken care of start to finish. its a meeting of Big Picture meets One Stop Shop!
