How My Addiction to House of Cards Will Help You Achieve What You Want

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. –Bruce Lee

My guilty pleasure, as of late, is binge watching House of Cards.. I’ve watched four seasons in one month and as a non-TV watcher, I amaze myself at how much time I have spent being enthralled with the show.

What keeps me watching House of Cards are the two main characters, Frank and Claire. They possess an unwavering determination to achieve their goals regardless of what gets in their way. While their tactics often lack integrity as they manipulate and maneuver to get what they want, their single-minded focus made me think about the commitments you make and how far will you go to achieve what you want. Where and when do you stop and let yourself off the hook?

Most of us give up, declare it impossible or claim failure too soon. Success happens in the 11th hour, when you have tried everything else and have nothing left to give. And that goes for everything in life, whether it’s getting your kids to eat their veggies, mastering a personal habit or increasing your sales.

When the odds are against them, Claire and Frank call in favors, stay up all night and reaffirm their longstanding goals, individually and together. They push their known limits to get it done… and even though the path may be full of twists and turns, what keeps me watching the show is that they get it done.  They show up every time, ready to take on what comes their way.

I’m not an advocate of pulling all-nighters as a method to achieving anything (it lowers productivity) but the question that came to me was, how committed am I? The answer surprised me and it may surprise you too if you take some time to think about it.

What would open up for you if you committed to taking one step further than you have before. That space where you think you have nothing left…

From my own experience, that is when the magic happens. Most people unconsciously put a limit on what they think they can accomplish. Once you move past this point the possibilities are endless and it’s much easier to go further and further.

Take a deep breath and go into unknown territory next time. Instead of giving up, push yourself a little harder and keep your goals in the forefront of your mind. Keep connecting to your vision and how you will feel when you achieve it. Good luck and let me know how you do!
