The Essentials For Creating a Toxic Free Home
“Take the curtains out of your mouth! And don’t eat that off the floor!”
These pleas may seem a bit out of place, unless you are like many parents and have lived these exact situations. Whether you find yourself chasing kids around the house, living with housemates, or relishing in your new space all to yourself, our home environment is a sacred place we want to keep clean and safe.
As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, I look at the body and our lifestyle as a whole system. If we just focus on the body without taking into account where we live, what job we do and even what we think, we could miss reaching our true optimum health. If we are going to spend time and effort to be healthy and feel our best, let’s ensure that our very foundation, our home, is setting us up for success from the start.
I always remind my clients that our bodies are super computers. It’s not a drug or a supplement or even an essential oil that “cures” your ailments. Those kudos belong 100% to your body and its immune system. But in order for your body to be the bug-busting-healthy-can’t-keep-me-down type, it does require some key tools. Eating clean whole foods combined with daily exercise is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. Yet if we eat and workout in a toxic environment, we find ourselves fighting an uphill battle.
To explain toxic accumulation, let’s look at a normal day. You wake up on sheets washed in detergent. Shower time includes soap and shampoo. Next up, we slather some toothpaste on a brush and get scrubbing. We want to impress the clients so let’s add some deodorant and makeup. Sunscreen to “protect” our skin. Throw on some clothes (washed in the same detergent as our sheets). Walk barefoot to your kitchen on your freshly scrubbed floor. Grab that apple off the kitchen counter, and you are on your way. Depending on the detergent, soap, shampoo, deodorant, makeup and cleaner you use, those small amount of toxins add up to one big load in your system.
Most people know that our skin is our largest organ. I teach my clients that if you won’t eat something, then don’t put it on your skin. The skin absorbs lotions, oils, makeup, soaps and anything else that we slather on it. These compounds get absorbed into your system and now your body has to find a way to dispose of them. If it becomes overworked and overloaded, it starts to communicate that to us in the form of illness.
Now wait a minute. Should we just throw our hands up in the air and surrender now? How can we win!? There will always be toxins and pollutants. Our body is expertly designed to filter, fight and eliminate these as waste. But imagine if we had the power to reduce the amount of toxins we are asking our body to get rid of each day. What would it feel like to have less sinus infections? Headaches? Restless sleep? Brain fog and upset stomachs?
The good news is…we DO have that power! And living toxic free doesn’t have to be yet another thing to add to your “to do” list! You don’t need to wake up and think “Ug….I have to fit in my toxic free living today.” Nope. A few simple swaps are all it takes to help reduce the toxic load for you and your loved ones.
As a health coach, I look for natural ways to keep my body and environment clean. I used to make my own soaps, deodorant, cleaners and toothpaste, but let’s face it…even I can’t find the time (or desire) to do this every day. And my clients certainly don’t. A solution I have found has been to include more natural ways of healing into my life in the form of essential oils.
Essential oils, derived directly from plants, have been used for over five thousand years and offer dietary and medicinal benefits. I started using essential oils in 2005 when my mom got sick. Our goal was to eliminate as many toxins from our food and lifestyle as we could. And when you don’t want the oil to just “smell good,” but you need it to be effective and therapeutic, you quickly realize that quality matters. Today, I have family, friends and clients incorporating therapeutic grade essential oils and oil based products into their nutrition and their environment.
Next time you throw on your favorite outfit, grab some food off your counter and walk with your bare feet across your cleaned floors, you can smile. Smile BIG. Because you made a few simple swaps. And your body is happy. Healthy. And ready to live life full out!
