The Importance of Home

Have you ever wondered why there are so many home design shows on TV? And why do these people think it’s so important whether you live in the house or are trying to sell it? Isn’t it all about making a house look pretty? I don’t think so.

Interior design is a process. An interior designer or decorator is the guide that helps you through that process to link your home and your heart. Your choices during this process – from the barest idea of a plan, to the furniture, and down to the simplest accessory – will determine how your home feels, looks, functions, and connects with YOU. The process takes you from living in a house to sanctuary – your home.

Beauty is only the outcome and the surface result. A home that relates to those who live there is soothing, supportive, energizing, and a positive grounding to the rest of your life. How do you begin that process?

Start with what you want. How do you want to live? What do you love? Leave out what you don’t want and focus on the positive aspects. Did you know that you can create a more positive life for yourself if your thoughts are positive? Your home is a reflection of what’s inside you and it can affect your mindset.

When a negative thought occurs, turn it around and speak the positive version. Do it often enough and it becomes ingrained in your being. Hold on to the positive feelings that come with thinking about what you want. Then you become the magnet that attracts the best of what’s possible in your life.

This is powerful stuff. Is it easy? No. I have struggled all my life with negativity. But then I stop (because no one can do it for you) and make myself re-state that negative thought as a positive statement. And that is when transformation occurs and change is welcome in your life and home.

So, what does this have to do with your home? In the past, you may have followed the trends when decorating your home only to find that it doesn’t truly fit the way you live.

Perfect For You

Don’t look to the trends to help you figure out what sofa to buy or even where to place it in a room. Trends have their place, but they aren’t always right for you. Don’t even spend money on furniture until you know what is best for you. Author G.K. Chesterton wrote that “home” is the one place in your life where you can experience your most authentic self without someone else telling you who you should be

Are you looking for others to approve of the design choices you’ve made? Don’t do that! The design of your home must come from your own heart. From your happy memories, your future dreams, from your own needs, and especially from your own desires. Your home is the perfect place in which to express who you are, what you love, and who you aspire to be.

And your interior designer should listen to you so that she can guide you to the best solution, colors, space plan, and even accessories that will fit you.

It must come from your own heart. Love this! Thanks for breaking it down, Christina. You make it sound easy. With the right person, it is.
